The area is particularly known for its extensive coral reefs, which are among the most diverse and vibrant in the world. It is home to over 1,500 species of fish, 600 species of coral, and numerous endangered and endemic species. A significant portion of the Coral Sea is protected as part of the Coral Sea Marine Park, which covers approximately 1 million square kilometers (386,000 square miles) and is the largest marine protected area in the world. History buffs will be aware of the significance of this area during World War II. In May 1942, the Battle of the Coral Sea took place between the United States and Imperial Japanese naval forces. It was a major naval battle that helped halt the Japanese advance in the Pacific and marked the first carrier vs. carrier battle in history.
